Levels / Pathways

INTRA School Competition

For many young people sporting competition is first experienced through intra-house teams, form groups or in PE lessons. This level of the School Games will build on a school’s existing work to offer pupils a year-round programme of regular intra-school competition in a number of sports that culminate in a School Games Day: the ultimate school sports day.

INTER School Competition

Inter-school competition for years 3 to 13. At this stage individuals and teams will be selected to represent their school in local inter-school competitions. Schools will have the flexibility to decide which sports to enter but are encouraged to involve as many pupils as possible by creating breadth in the sports they offer and depth through the creation of additional teams. Sports delivered at this level of the school games should follow the formats designed by the relevant National Governing Body.

County School Games Finals

Each county will host a multi-sport showcase event as a culmination of the year-round programme of competition between schools that is offered at borough level. Teams and individuals competing at borough level will win the opportunity to compete and represent their district in this event if they qualify via leagues or competitions in their boroughs.

In Greater Manchester the county event is split into a Winter & Summer Games to celebrate the best talent across Greater Manchester in various sports decided by a local Organising Committee. Both events are held in Manchester utilising some of the City’s World Class sporting facilities.

National Finals

This is a national multi-sport event, in which the country’s most talented athletes of school age complete if selected by a National Governing Body of Sport. This event will take place in high quality venues amongst a unique and vibrant atmosphere to replicate the world’s top sporting occasions. The event supports athlete’s development and acts as a stepping stone to further national and international competition.
